Overview
Ruanchong Primary School is an innovative project in Dongguan, China, that successfully blends historical architecture with modern educational needs. One of the standout features of the project is the use of mortise and tenon joinery (卯榫工艺), a centuries-old woodworking technique that has been employed to preserve the historical integrity of the building while ensuring structural stability. The project focuses on preserving the traditional character of a century-old school while introducing contemporary design elements that enhance functionality and provide a dynamic environment for learning. The design emphasizes natural light, spaciousness, and creating a strong connection between the built environment and its surrounding community, offering a space that encourages creativity and collaboration among students. Through its thoughtful restoration and modernization, the school serves as a cultural bridge, honoring the past while preparing for the future of education.
